World premier piece by director Margaret Wall as part of the 4th annual Sprit of the River

Rehearsals began in earnest for “3 states of mind, 1 river” on Saturday! Maggie was approached by the Estuary Coordinators for the Columbia Riverkeeper and asked to choreograph an original 8 minute ballet inspired by the Columbia River to be performed at Spirit of the River on Saturday, October 9th.

“Celebrate the "Spirit of the River" with a festive evening of music, poetry, dance, photography, spoken word, and fine art Saturday, October 9th at the Clatsop Community College Performing Arts Center at 16th and Franklin in Astoria. The evening begins at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge across the street from the PAC, with hors d'oeuvres, wine and a silent auction of works by favorite regional artists. The performance begins at 8 p.m. at the PAC. This is the 4th annual benefit in which gifted local artists and performers from the region join forces to share their talents at a fund raiser for Columbia Riverkeeper.”

ASB is pleased to announce that we have just received license to use music from, FIVE BAGATELLES by Gerald Finzi, our first time using music composed in the 20th century! Thank you to Boosey & Hawkes and the Finzi Trust. “3 states of mind, 1 river” will be performed by five students from the Astoria School of Ballet: Rachel Atkinson, Raina Christian, Annik Fremstad, Emma Gaeuman, & Alaina Meyer.

Maggie in NYC

Maggie has been at the Gelsey Kirkland’s Academy of Classical Ballet for a full week now and is having a great time! She was going to keep this blog going while she was in New York but has been too busy. She did send me some photos last night (and promised more are on the way) and asked me to post them. She did confess to me that when she first meet Gelsey (her childhood hero) at her apartment it was a “big deal for me! “ On Monday she gushed…”I got my first hug from Gelsey today!” She has been seeing a lot of great things in the studio and is excited to start ASB’s 7th year of classes in a few weeks!

PNB's Coppelia: Beyond ballet's great comedy!

An ASB MUST SEE: Pacific Northwest Ballet's Coppelia! You WILL NOT believe the sets, the quality of dancing, the music, the comedy (Nate and I were both laughing out loud), and how quickly the time goes by! We didn't want it to be over! It's ballet's great comedy, and great for all ages! You can still see it next week: June 10th to the 13th! Go to www.pnb.org for tickets! You'll be glad you did!
Thanks so much to all who contributed to the greatest gift ever! We could not have enjoyed ourselves more!
